Saint John, New Brunswick – In front of an enthusiastic crowd at Lakefield Elementary School, Canaport LNG and the Saint John Sea Dogs launched the fifth season of their joint educational initiative, the ‘Get FANatical About Math’ Program today. Saint John Sea Dogs players joined representatives from Canaport LNG and the Saint John Sea Dogs staff in a math challenge versus the students using the program.
Sponsored by Canaport LNG, this comprehensive program is designed to foster the math skills of students from kindergarten to grade eight in School District 6, District 8 and Samuel-de-Champlain school. On average, about 15,000 students participate in the program annually, which applies math principles to Sea Dogs hockey. All lessons and activities are accessible online using Smart Board technology, making the program more engaging and interactive for students, and activities are tailored for each grade level. Both students and teachers who participate in the program are eligible to win prizes from Canaport LNG and the Saint John Sea Dogs.
“Since the program began, participation has increased significantly and results have improved with each season, showing us that kids are responding to the material and are actively using the skills they learn” said Get FANatical About Math Program developers, Derek & Krista McCallum.
Adolfo Azcarraga, General Manager of Canaport LNG, said his company feels the enhancement of math skills is very important for students.
“Math skills are important for many career choices. Our hope is to help students excel in math so their futures remain open to many possibilities”, said Azcarraga. “This program is a great way to get kids interested in math and really shows them how numbers are used in their everyday activities. The fact that this is the fifth year of the program and results continue to increase each year is a testament to its effectiveness, and we are proud to support this initiative.”
